Porto Seguro

Discover your favorite beach

By Ricardo Freire

The Discovery Coast has some of the most varied types of beaches you can find in Brazil. There are beaches of all kinds, for all tastes – and each can be enjoyed in a different way.

In Porto Seguro, the beaches have colossal tents with venues for music and comedy shows – and lambada-aerobics sessions. At the inviting district of Arraial d’Ajuda, take a walk along the beach during the day and along Main Street at night. Trancoso’s signature is its charm – both in Quadrado, the main square, and in its beach lounges.

Those seeking complete tranquility will find paradise at Praia do Espelho (Mirror Beach) or in Santo André, the first beach past Santa Cruz Cabrália. Meanwhile, Caraíva retains its alternative style even now that there’s electricity in the region (with underground wires).

O que fazer em Porto Seguro

Going to a different beach every day is the most common pastime for those visiting the region for the first time. After you discover your favorite beach, however, you’ll likely want to see no other.

In Porto Seguro, visit Cidade Alta, the oldest village in Brazil. And stay tuned to the evening calendar: during the week, the megatents operate in rotation. The most charming evening can be found on the other side of the Buranhém river, at Arraial d’Ajuda.

The best time to visit the Quadrado (Square), in Trancoso, is in the late afternoon, when the shops start opening. In Caraíva, forró plays on into the night throughout the summer and in July; off-season, the dance parties happen on Fridays and Saturdays.
