JTC - Bauru

The atmosphere on the streets, bars and restaurants is mainly that of a College town. It couldn’t be any different, since there are more than a dozen colleges here, including Unesp and USP Campi.

But students don’t make-up the entire city, which is one of the largest in Midwest São Paulo. Business tourism and scientific-medical tourism are equally strong – the latter because the local universities offer specific courses in the subjects.

Bauru’s traffic is well organized, the addresses are laid out according to city blocks and Bauru has a great deal of green spaces. The city likes to celebrate the sandwich named in its honor – a São Paulo creation, inspired on the preferences of a Bauru resident. There is even a municipal law specifying the correct recipe and a picturesque statue on the central square.

The first mandatory stop is at one of the three restaurants that carry the seal of authenticity for the bauru sandwich (ham, cheese, tomato) recipe.

During the week the nightlife is concentrated at the Getúlio Vargas Ave., where things start to buzz in the late afternoon.  At Nações Unidas Ave. you can also find a few bars, and the churro stands at the Praça da Paz (Peace Square) are another traditional meeting place – much like the Vitória-Régia Square, the city’s main green space, and the Bauru and Alameda Quality malls.

On the weekends, visit the well-equipped zoo, stop by the neighboring Botanical Gardens, (with a great collection of ferns) and take a panoramic flight on a hang-glider.
