Punta Cana

All-inclusive Caribbean

By Ricardo Freire

Imagine a beach like the ones in the northeast – extense, perfectly cut, framed by endless palm trees and protected by a barrier reef, but with the white sands and turquoise blue ocean of the Caribbean. Welcome to Punta Cana.

This section of the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic houses at least 40 resorts. That number could go as high as 60 if you consider that some resorts include up to five hotels under one brand name.

None have buildings taller than the palm trees. And all resorts are on the all-inclusive system, meaning that all meals, snacks and drinks are included - and you're never caught off guard when asking for the tab. An absolute success: more than two million tourists walk these sands every year.

O que fazer em Punta Cana

To start off, enjoy everything your resort has to offer. Explore the beach you're on: that perfect ocean is also included in your package. While strolling on the sand, you’ll find crafts stores.

When you need a change of scenery, there are tours galore, for some extra cash.  Close to shore, there are reefs where you can snorkel or enjoy other forms of diving. You can swim with dolphins and sea lions. Or pilot your own speedboat.

From the Bayahibe beach, just an hour away, you can take boats that tour Saona and Catalina islands. Further ahead you’ll find Altos de Chavon, a replica of a medieval European village. Between January and March you can go whale watching in Samana.
